Motorcycle course 4h

The shorter version of the basic course, for anyone who already has a motorcycle category on their licence.

The course

The 4-hour basic motorcycle course is the shortened version of the basic practical training, for those who already have a motorcycle category on their licence and are moving up to a higher category. In practice, if the OCV has set 4 hours on your learner’s permit, this is the course you need.

In one session, you’ll review the essentials with a driving instructor: bike control, manoeuvres and riding in traffic, tailored to your new category. You come with your own motorcycle or scooter, registered and compliant with your new category.

The course is taught in a small group of up to 5 people, supervised by a driving instructor.

Who is it for

This course is for you if the OCV has set 4 hours of practical instruction on your learner's permit—usually because you already hold a motorcycle category (A1) and you’re moving up to a higher category. The exact number of hours is always the one shown on your permit: if you’re unsure, rely on it or ask us. For your very first two-wheeler licence, you need the full 12-hour course.

Programme

  • Refresher on two-wheeler control: balance, braking, slow-speed manoeuvres
  • Riding in traffic, adapted to your new category
  • Cornering technique and emergency braking
  • Key points to know before the practical exam

What to bring

  • Your motorcycle learner's permit (new category)
  • Your own motorcycle or scooter, registered and compliant with your learner's permit category
  • The vehicle registration document (carte grise)
  • A full tank of fuel, filled up before the course
  • Full safety gear: approved helmet, gloves, jacket, long trousers, and high-top shoes

Prerequisites

  • Already hold a motorcycle category (A1) and have the learner's permit for the category you’re aiming for
  • Have a registered motorcycle or scooter that complies with your new category
  • The number of hours to complete (4h) is shown on your learner's permit

What's included

  • Supervision by a driving instructor
  • Access to our practice area
  • Basic course certificate

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether I need 4h or 12h?
The OCV sets the number of hours based on your situation, and it’s shown on your learner's permit. In short: 4h if you already hold a motorcycle category (A1) and you’re moving up to a higher category; 12h for your first two-wheeler licence. If in doubt, rely on your learner's permit.
Do I need to come with my own motorcycle?
Yes. For the basic course, you come with your own registered motorcycle or scooter that matches your category, along with its vehicle registration document (carte grise). Bring your full gear: helmet, gloves, jacket, long trousers, and high-top shoes.
What’s the difference between A1, A limited and A?
A1 (from age 16) covers 125cc up to 11 kW. The A limited category up to 35 kW (from age 18) allows more powerful motorcycles. Category A, with unlimited power, is available from age 20 after 2 years’ experience in A limited and a practical exam. Since 2021, there is no longer direct access to unlimited A.
How long do I have to take the course?
As with the 12-hour course, you must start the course within 4 months of getting your learner's permit.
