The road is learned, success is built!

Where to start?

New to this? That's perfectly normal.

Everyone starts from scratch. The first concrete step is the first aid course: it's mandatory and doesn't depend on any other procedure. Book it, and we'll guide you through the rest, step by step.

Start with first aid

The Swiss driving licence explained

Terms that come up throughout the process, simply explained. Click to expand.

Learner's permit

The authorization that allows you to drive with an accompanying person during your learning period. It is obtained after the eye test, first aid, and passing the theory test.

First aid course (Samaritans)

The 10-hour first aid course is mandatory to obtain a learner's permit. It is taken with a recognized organization, such as SDS, and the certificate remains valid for 6 years.

Sensibilisation course

8 hours of traffic theory, mandatory for everyone. You learn to anticipate dangers and adopt responsible driving, in addition to the theory test.

Probationary licence

Your first driving licence, valid for 3 years. Within the first 12 months, you must complete the 2-phase course. Without serious infractions, the licence then becomes permanent.

Supplementary training (2 phases)

The mandatory training day after passing the exam, to be completed within the first 12 months of the probationary licence. It helps you better master risky situations.

OCV

The Cantonal Vehicle Office: the Geneva authority that manages driving licences, applications, theory, and practical exams. It is the official contact for all your procedures.

Categories (B, A1, A)

Category B corresponds to cars. Categories A1 and A concern motorcycles, depending on engine capacity and power. Each category has its own age and training conditions. Since 2019, the Swiss driving licence no longer differentiates between automatic and manual transmission.

Accompanied driving

Between your lessons, you can practice with a relative once you have your learner's permit. Your accompanying person must be at least 23 years old and have held a permanent Category B licence for 3 years, sit next to you, and be able to reach the handbrake. The blue magnetic L plate must remain visible at the rear, and these journeys can only be made in Switzerland.

Frequently Asked Questions about driving licences in Geneva

Answers to the questions most often asked by young drivers.

What is the best driving school in Geneva?

At what age can I start?

You can start certain procedures for Category B from age 17. First aid and the eye test can even be done a little earlier. Contact us to plan according to your birthday.

How long does it take to get a driving licence?

It depends on your pace and exam availability. On average, allow a few months between starting the process and the practical exam. A package often helps you progress faster.

How much does it cost in total?

The budget varies depending on the number of driving lessons needed. Our packages group classroom steps at advantageous rates; the rest depends on your individual progress.

In what order should I complete the steps?

The recommended order: first aid and eye test, then learner's permit application, theory test, sensibilisation course, driving lessons, and finally the practical exam. Our detailed guide will walk you through it step by step.

Car or motorcycle: what are the differences?

Cars fall under Category B, motorcycles under Categories A1 and A. Motorcycles also require specific basic courses. Age and training conditions differ by category.

What is a probationary licence?

It's your first driving licence, valid for 3 years. Within the first 12 months, you must complete the 2-phase course (1 day). Without serious infractions, your licence then becomes permanent.

What happens if I fail an exam?

Don't panic: a failed exam can be retaken after a waiting period. We'll review the areas to work on together and plan the next steps to maximize your chances of success.

Is there a minimum number of lessons required?

There's no imposed minimum for cars: it all depends on your comfort behind the wheel. The driving instructor will assess with you the ideal time to take the practical exam.

One of the best in Geneva to get your first aid, theorie, sensibilisation and so on. I did my first aid on another school (wasn't happy/unsatisfied) but I did my theorie and sensi here, and it is way way better. I wanted the course in english because I am not confident in my french and what's the point of studying if you won't understand anything. And here it's just perfect! With Slim (Slim Shady) all is explained well, informations were clear (especially in my theorie it helps a lot). Will point out from the smallest point to the obvious ones. It's very recommendable and if you're not confident on your french and you want it in english. Do it here! And even if you're finished with the course they are still open for questions regarding driving/rules or to help you out etc. 🙌👌🤝📌

I enjoyed the Slim instructor's classes; his explanations are excellent, and the sessions are very engaging. Additionally, they generously provided aperitifs during breaks, showing great kindness. I highly recommend them.

I did well in my driver's license conversion test thanks to the very thorough and clearly explained driving lessons by Mr. Slim Kassous. I took 4 lessons and learned a great deal. Highly recommended—the driving school truly lives up to its name: success indeed!
