The course

The basic motorcycle course, or basic practical instruction (BPI), is the mandatory training to obtain your motorcycle or scooter licence, category A1 or A. It lasts 12 hours, divided into 3 parts of 4 hours each to be taken in order, on different days.

You’ll ride in a small group of maximum 5 people, supervised by a driving instructor: first mastering the two-wheeler on our practice ground, then real traffic in Geneva and winding roads. You come with your own motorcycle or scooter, registered (L plate) and compliant with your learner’s permit category. This is the course to take if you don’t have any motorcycle category on your licence yet.

Who is it for

Future riders who don't have any motorcycle category on their licence yet: this applies to your very first two-wheeler licence, for both A1 and A, and also if you already have a car licence (a category B licence does not exempt you from the basic course). If you already hold an A1 licence and are upgrading your category, you need the 4h course, not this one.

Frequently asked questions

Why 12h and not 4h?

The 12h course is for you if you don't have any motorcycle category on your licence yet. If you already hold an A1 licence and are upgrading your category, only 4h are required. If in doubt, the number of hours to complete is set by the OCV and noted on your learner's permit.

I already have a car licence, do I need to do the 12h?

Yes. A category B licence does not exempt you from the basic motorcycle course: you must complete the full 12 hours. However, it does exempt you from retaking the first aid course, theory, and traffic sensibilisation course, which were already validated for the car licence.

Do I need to come with my own motorcycle?

Yes. For the basic course, you come with your own motorcycle or scooter, registered (L plate) and compliant with your learner's permit category, along with its vehicle's road permit. Also, make sure to bring your full gear: helmet, gloves, jacket, long pants, and high-top shoes.

What is the deadline for taking the course?

You must start the basic course within 4 months of obtaining your learner's permit. Once the course is completed, your learner's permit is extended by 12 months so you can prepare for the practical exam at your own pace.

I've never ridden before, can I sign up?

The basic course is not for absolute beginners: you must already know how to handle your two-wheeler. If you're starting from scratch, begin with a private introductory lesson, then move on to the basic course.
