The course

The theory course prepares you for the basic theory exam, the road rules test you must pass to obtain your learner’s permit. In the classroom, an instructor explains right-of-way rules, signage, and real-life situations, and you practice with mock tests similar to the official exam.

This course is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended: being well-prepared means you pass faster and avoid paying for retakes. A simple, modern, and interactive method in small groups, with access to review sessions based on availability.

Frequently asked questions

Is the theory course mandatory?
No. Only the theory exam is mandatory, not the course. However, taking a classroom course significantly increases your chances of passing the first time, especially with the new questions on driver assistance systems.
What is the theory exam like?
The exam lasts 45 minutes: 50 multiple-choice questions. You pass if you do not exceed 15 penalty points (each wrong or unchecked answer removes 1 point). The OCV fee is CHF 70 for the exam, covering up to 3 attempts over 12 months. Once passed, your exam remains valid indefinitely.
How do I register for the exam?
Go to vehicules.ge.ch, under the "Rendez-vous pour examen théorique + pratique" section, using the information from your "exam candidate" form. Registration is not possible by phone, and you should allow for a 4 to 6-week lead time. You must first have completed the first aid course and passed an eye test at an approved optician.
What is the difference with the sensibilisation course?
The theory course prepares you for the theory exam (the road code). The sensibilisation course is a mandatory 8-hour course on hazard perception, required before the practical exam. They are two different things, often confused.
What changes in 2027?
Starting January 1, 2027, you must have completed the sensibilisation course before you can register for the theory exam. So, prepare for both early in your journey.
