Have you just moved to Geneva and your driving licence is from another country? Here\u2019s what matters: you have 12 months<\/strong> from your arrival to apply to exchange your foreign licence for a Swiss one with the OCV (Cantonal Office of Vehicles)<\/a>. If your licence was issued in the EU, EFTA, or one of the 14 countries that have an agreement with Switzerland, you can exchange it without a test. Otherwise, you\u2019ll need to take a driving assessment\u2014a short practical check that cannot be retaken if you fail. <\/p>\n\n

Foreign licence exchange: what the law says<\/h2>\n\n

A licence exchange is the process that converts your foreign national driving licence into a Swiss driving licence, without starting from scratch. It\u2019s regulated at federal level by the Ordinance on Admission to Road Traffic (OAC)<\/a>, and handled by your canton of residence. In Geneva, that\u2019s the OCV. <\/p>\n\n

The legal deadline: 12 months after you arrive<\/h3>\n\n

Your foreign licence remains valid in Switzerland for 12 months from the date you take up residence, as long as you haven\u2019t spent more than three consecutive months abroad in the meantime. This is the window in which you must submit your exchange application. <\/p>\n\n

A concrete example: you move to Eaux-Vives on September 1 with a Brazilian licence. You can drive as normal until August 31 the following year. But if your country requires a driving assessment, it\u2019s best not to wait until the eleventh month to deal with it. <\/p>\n\n

What if you go past the 12 months?<\/h3>\n\n

After the deadline, your foreign licence no longer allows you to drive in Switzerland. The exchange is still possible and the process is the same, but you must keep the car parked until the Swiss licence is issued. Driving anyway means driving without valid authorization, with the penalties that come with it. Better to submit your application on time. <\/p>\n\n

Countries with an agreement: who can exchange without a test?<\/h2>\n\n

It\u2019s the question everyone asks, and the answer depends only on the country that issued your licence. Switzerland groups countries into three categories, based on the mutual recognition agreements listed in Annex 2 of the OAC. The details are summarized by FEDRO (Federal Roads Office)<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

EU and EFTA: direct exchange, all categories<\/h3>\n\n

If your licence is from one of these countries, you\u2019re exempt from all tests, including for professional categories: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden.<\/p>\n\n

In practice, a French cross-border commuter who moves to Plainpalais submits their file at the OCV and receives their Swiss licence a few days later\u2014without ever getting into an exam car.<\/p>\n\n

The 14 countries with a partial agreement<\/h3>\n\n

Andorra, Australia, Canada, South Korea, the United States, Israel, Japan, Morocco, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, Singapore, Taiwan and Tunisia have a reciprocity agreement with Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n

For cars (category B) and motorbikes (category A), the exchange is done without a test, just like with a European licence. The driving assessment applies only to professional categories: truck, bus, passenger transport. A few special cases exist depending on the exact category shown on your licence\u2014if in doubt, check directly with the OCV. <\/p>\n\n

All other countries: driving assessment is mandatory<\/h3>\n\n

Is your licence from Brazil, Kosovo, India, the Philippines, Turkey, or any other country outside the two lists? You\u2019ll need to prove you can drive to Swiss standards during a driving assessment. For categories A and B, there is generally no theory test to retake; however, it is added for professional categories. <\/p>\n\n

The crucial point to know: the driving assessment cannot be retaken. If you fail, you\u2019re no longer allowed to use your foreign licence in Switzerland, and you must redo the full candidate pathway: theory test, then practical test, with all the licence steps<\/a> that involves. In other words, a failure turns a simple formality into months of admin and a much bigger budget. <\/p>\n\n

Why experienced drivers fail<\/h3>\n\n

You may have been driving for fifteen years. The issue is almost never vehicle control\u2014it\u2019s local habits: priority to the right in neighbourhoods, trams that always have priority, Geneva-style roundabouts, 30 km\/h zones, and the importance of observation and shoulder checks. The process at the Geneva OCV, step by step<\/h2>\n\n

In Geneva, everything happens at the OCV, Route de Veyrier 86, 1227 Carouge. No appointment is needed for a licence exchange: just go to the counter, Monday 9am\u20134pm and Tuesday to Friday 7:30am\u20134pm. Official information and the form are on the ge.ch licence exchange page<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n\n

  1. Get your eyesight checked by an approved optician. The certificate must be less than 24 months old. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Fill in the application form to exchange a foreign driving licence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Gather the documents (list below) and go to the OCV counter in Carouge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Pay the fee: CHF 150 for a standard licence, CHF 200 for categories C, C1 and D.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. If your country is exempt from tests, you\u2019ll receive your Swiss licence within 2 to 3 working days. Otherwise, the OCV will summon you for a driving assessment, with an additional exam fee depending on the current tariff. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n
